About this deal

Like you I’m fascinated by the premise for this story (abandoned amusement parks make for a very creepy setting! It sounds fairly simple, however, none of the contestants are prepared for what is actually seeking them.

Hide” is included on the Goodreads list “2022 Horror Novels Written by Women and Non-Binary Femmes”. Hunger Games has absolutely nothing on this but saying that if you love the Hunger Games you’ll adore this book. Even after writing this review, I still don’t think I can properly convey just how badly you need to read this book. This book touches on racism, homophobia, classism, and more, as well as exploring themes of trauma, PTSD, and finding community, and I feel like each of these topics was well-handled in a novel of this length. The prose is simplistic, and though the characters are out of their teens, most of them are emotionally stunted from trauma and seem younger (one has her first kiss ever during the competition). But as players develop alliances and rivalries, it becomes clear to some that there’s more than money at stake, while others uncover the horrors lurking in the park.

Even though everyone is desperate to win - to seize their dream futures or escape their haunting pasts - Mack feels sure that she can beat her competitors.Horror is such a delicious genre as it written to entertain, but also disturb and make the reader uncomfortable. The gates would swing wide, and the summer migrant workers and distant relatives of the wealthy townsfolk, normally too poor to enjoy something designed purely for escape, would wander in, wide-eyed. I would be quite interested to see what type of monster is created for the show compared to my imagination.
