About this deal

Trying to make it professionally in the world of drama is immensely difficult, but Aguirre just keeps at it.

At their meeting, Oughton denied memory of having raped Aguirre, saying that all of his victims were white. Had he asked me, I might have advised against hiring a detective, as I am of the opinion that it should be a last-ditch effort, not the first line of defense. Although I do not always agree with her politics, I admire her courage and vulnerability, and envy her ability to bring such overwhelming emotion and disquieting memories to the page.Particularly jarring is her account of the “mock firing squad” she and younger sister Ale experienced when little more than toddlers. The experience as she retells her rape is hard to read, but was written with sensitivity for the reader. It's definitely a drink that may be for a select few, but it's the kind of crazy cocktail everybody should try once.

Daughter of Chilean revolutionaries, and subsequently a political activist herself, Carmen Aguirre now lives in Canada where she is an actor and playwright. The book opens as Aguirre is in an acting class in Vancouver and has a flashback to being raped when she was thirteen. Most purchases from business sellers are protected by the Consumer Contract Regulations 2013 which give you the right to cancel the purchase within 14 days after the day you receive the item. The structure brings you into different ages and aspects of her life seemingly randomly at first, but soon you realize how each era and story folds back and forward with the rest. The subject matter is dark and she went through so much but she does add lightness and humour to it which I don't think I could do.Yet, I came away from the book with respect and admiration for Carmen Aguirre, for telling her story and for her strength. Aguirre’s first memoir, Something Fierce: Memoirs of a Revolutionary Daughter, describes her participation in Chile’s radical left resistance to Pinochet. After a while, James would be able to explain what he had meant to her satisfaction and she would drop her defensive attacks, but bring them up amidst later complicated entanglements where details lost in translation were seen as attacks on Maria’s unquestionable character. For those who've suffered trauma at the hands of someone else, daydreams of retribution can be a salve. The language did not flow, I was always aware I was 'reading' as opposed to stepping into the narrative and letting it do the work of carrying me over me.

She also details her early life as a child including her friendships, first visits to Canada and early love interests; I found this almost sort of contrived. The mainstream life inhabited my head and lived on my skin, the refugee life in my heart, guts, and womb. Carmen Aguirre is a Vancouver-based theatre artist who has worked extensively in North and South America.
