About this deal

Like in the original AoE books, in addition to the discussion of design issues, the new book contains selection tables for various electronic parts. It is loaded with real life devilish down to details advice that one could try to dig days on end from other sources. If you are a hobbyist or maker who wants to acquire or improve a well-rounded knowledge of electronics then The Art of Electronics is an ideal book for you.

Yes, but an EE undergrad degree doesn’t necessarily teach you about electronic applications unless you take courses that focus around that. While I’ll discuss some of the highlights of each chapter — but not an exhaustive list — keep in mind that this book reads a little differently than AoE3: it’s more engineering reference handbook and less textbook. I purchased the print version as I was concerned that tech books don't display well on Kindle devices.

The 103 third parties who use cookies on this service do so for their purposes of displaying and measuring personalized ads, generating audience insights, and developing and improving products. I highly recommend for the hobbyist, but beware highlighting, just slip some copy paper between pages before to prevent bleed through. Delivered in folksy Horowitz and Hill style, it is rich with the kind of nitty-gritty information that's invaluable to circuit designers and manufacturers, much of which is absent (or difficult to find) elsewhere. If you can have an 'open book' exam, allowing you to bring a book in with you, then you need to have in-depth knowledge of this book prior to this, but its a great help if you know your way around it already. Doesn't dive terribly deep into any one specific topic, but has enough of everything to get started.

The only reservation is that the sheer size and weight means this is a document you read on a desk, workbench or table and not on your lap. However, for those interested in 1960s-1980s vintage analog synthesizers, this turns out to be a plus. The way … [it] present[s] the data allows the reader to get terrific perspective on a lot of landscape in a single view. They also cover some unusual capacitive-feedback op-amp circuits, logarithmic amplifiers, and driving capacitive loads, among other short topics. For someone closer to beginner like me what is that book that looks like it’s printed on graph paper, Electronics Notebook or something?

Currently he is the Director of Electronics Engineering at the Rowland Institute for Science where he has designed some 250 electronic instruments. You don’t always know all the characteristics of the IC that you may want to use based on the datasheets. As an example, the book devotes a section of a few pages to tunnel diodes, an esoteric subject with largely nostalgic interest for the authors.
