About this deal

I liked them a lot, though they argued from start to finish, and Saul eventually stormed off, supposedly because he couldn’t stand to be in the interview any longer, but really because he needed to score. But to keep ourselves on our toes, we have a rule that author gender is alternated, girl-boy-girl-boy, and the continents always rotated (with occasional glitches). Grim, too, is Saul’s south London childhood: bullied, suicidal, defiant, he ends up, aged 14, in a boarding school for troubled youths. As a fan of the band and its various shoot-offs I really enjoyed it, and I think I would have even if I wasn’t, but I suppose we’ll really never know on that front now. A book to dash the ridiculous modern idea that artists are this benevolent class of creatives separate from or more enlightened than the rest of society…and therefore a book the culture was desperately in need of.

Emily Spowage is perfect for the 3rd person telling, and this is offset superbly by the world weariness of Lias narration.

It involves a spectacular amount of drug taking and a wanton disregard for anything approaching professionalism.

SHORTLISTED FOR THE PENDERYN MUSIC BOOK PRIZE 'The story of a band that's always on the brink: of stardom, of madness, of brilliance, of disgrace' Miranda Sawyer, Observer 'You begin to wonder why more biographies aren't tackled with such invention' Record Collector 'This book is a rarity' Mark Lanegan 'One of the finest music books in aeons' Kevin Barry From the mountains of Algeria to the squats of South London via sectarian Northern Ireland, Ten Thousand Apologies is the sordid and thrilling story of the country's most notorious cult band, Fat White Family. The book covers an expansive period of time, ranging from Lias' youth in various towns, such as Cookstown and Knocknacarra, to his drug addled time spent within The Fat White Family. I sincerely hope that this book, along with everything else the Fat Whites create, is a world-beating success, and that mass adoration and cold hard cash will be theirs. Nigeyb makes a good point about this book, “It involves a spectacular amount of drug taking and a wanton disregard for anything approaching professionalism. but some of the editing feels a lil' rusty and all the stories of smack, crack and meth did start to blur into one. After a few uneventful days of sweating and coughing alone in his bedroom on the top floor of his father's semi-detached in suburban Cambridge, events took a serious turn for the worse. Aan de ene kant pijnlijk te lezen hoe destructief ze zijn, maar eigenlijk blijft het nooit lang triest in het boek. So starts 'Ten Thousand Apologies', the new fabricated, reimagined, alternative and embellished (and yet perhaps true) portrait of Fat White Family written by singer and front person Lias Saoudi and novelist and poet Adelle Stripe. A glorious indictment of the banality you swallow everywhere else, it is arguably the least patronising guitar music ever made.
