About this deal

Since their first publication in 1923, Cicely Mary Barker’s Flower Fairies have enchanted both adults and children alike around the world. Such was the success of this book that it was followed by editions on the flowers of Summer in 1925 and of Autumn in 1926.

She seems to have received her fairy inspiration from several sources- from Kate Greenaway, Ida Rentoul Outhwaite, J. We are told that it is “At the edge of the woodland/ Where good fairies dwell…” and there are some mentions of faery kings and queens. Biography: Cicely Mary Barker (Author, Illustrator) Cicely Mary Barker was born in Croydon, South London in 1895 and died in 1973. It is presented as a pattern collection in digital copies, and in a 2023 Calendar format with print copies. Barker doesn’t seem to have been a faery believer, sadly; her motivation appears to have been wholly decorative and artistic.

The ratings/reviews displayed here may not be representative of every listing on this page, or of every review for these listings. Dancing at night under the moon is a traditional touch, as are “elfin coats of green” and there is a sense that fairies are as old as the seasons. Nonetheless, even in this simple and innocent world, though, there is just a hint of another Faerie.

Captivating illustrations and whimsical details bring nature's wonders to life, making this calendar a delightful companion for fairy enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. They bear only tenuous links to the faeries of British tradition, but over the last century they have nevertheless been inspirational and meaningful enough for people to effectively create their own tradition.Clean and tightly bound paperback original, stapled spine, glossy pictorial covers, name and date on front cover, marks at top of first 3 pages plus small annotations on one pattern. The original art of Cicely Mary Barker celebrates the magic of seasonal flowers and roadside posies with exquisite attention to detail and the whimsy of childlike pixies. If you’ve already done that, your item hasn’t arrived, or it’s not as described, you can report that to Etsy by opening a case. On the whole Barker’s flower fairies are charming in their purity, delicacy and prettiness- features which have assured their enduring popularity.
