Both the Blundstone 550 and 585 are part of the Blundstone Classics, which is an upgrade over the original series with the addition of more comfort features. It's also worth bearing in mind that half sizes in Blundstones provide extra width not length so a 5.5 is the same length as a 5, just a bit wider. If you know the Australian brand Blundstone then you know about “The Original” Blundstone 500 boot that is as versatile as it is aesthetically pleasing. For over 50 years not much has changed when it comes to this boot because the initial design and technology continues to prove itself over and over to be a cornerstone for the brand.The thermal range of Blundstones - 584, 566, 1478, 1477 - are all sized up to accommodate the sheepskin insole and so are an even bigger fit than the equivalent non-thermal Blundstones in the same size. If after trying on the boots you find that they are a bit big but not enough to warrant dropping down a size, you can lift up the footbed of the boots and insert a thin insole underneath. This will give a snugger fit. Avoid exposing your boots to chemical contamination. Solvents, strong acids and alkalis will do irreparable damage on leather, whilst commonplace substances like milk and salt are also highly damaging. I also like that the footbed is removable so you can add your own custom insert if you struggle with foot fatigue or any sort of pain. You should use a leather conditioner on your boots whenever they need them. If your boots are looking a little scuffed and worn, always remember to use a conditioner.

I don’t think the Blundstone 550 is a bad boot. If you choose to buy them, I’m sure you’ll still get a year or two of hard wearing out of them. Not only are the upper of both the Blundstone 550 and 585 waterproof, but the outsoles have more than enough grip to help you to navigate wet or slushy surfaces in the winter. Take a dry clean towel and dab the shoes to remove any excess moisture and let air dry (keeping away from direct sunlight or heaters).
